Information and time line for getting
started in Quarter Midget racing at I-70 QMA
First Step
Attend a race at
I-70 QMA and see the action for yourself. Another great step would be to
participate in one of I-70 QMAs Quarter Midget Test Drive
events. This allows you the opportunity to see if you and your child would like
to become involved in the most fun and safest form of motorsports designed
specifically for kids.
Quarter Midgets and
Equipment
Purchasing a Quarter Midget is a big investment. You have
the option of purchasing new or used cars and equipment. When looking at used
Quarter Midgets, shop around, compare, and ask plenty of questions. Try to get
a package deal which may include spare parts and/or safety
equipment. Check out the classified sections of
www.quartermidgets.org and
www.quartermidgets.com for used Quarter Midgets and
equipment. Remember, if in doubt, ask some of the I-70 QMA members for
advice.
QMA Membership application
Complete the Quarter
Midgets of America (QMA) membership application. We will need copies of Birth
Certificates for the drivers listed on the application. It will also be
necessary to submit a 1-inch by 1-inch photo of each of the handlers (Parents)
listed on the application, so an identification badge can be
made.
Membership costs
I-70 QMAs club fee is $50.00
The QMA National Organization fee is $75.00 Which puts the total cost of a QMA
family membership at $125.00 per year.
Refundable Concession Stand
Fee
An $80 Concession Stand fee has been put in place to assist with
getting members to help work in I-70 QMAs Concession Stand. The fee is
set up so that each time you or a member of your family works in the Concession
Stand, you get refunded $20. After you have volunteered 4 times, you will have
been refunded your whole $80 Concession Stand Fee.
Novice
Training
After you have all of your necessary safety gear,
equipment, and Quarter Midget racecar, its time to begin your
childs Novice Training. I-70 QMAs Novice Trainer will work with you
in arranging a Novice training schedule for your driver.
The first stage
of Novice Training is a classroom session, where the basics are explained. At
this time it is also advisable to have your Quarter Midget and safety equipment
along so I-70 QMAs Safety Director can inspect for legal certification
and for proper mechanical operation. From there, I-70 QMA s Novice
Trainer will guide you and your family on a fun and rewarding experience in
Quarter Midget racing. |

Safety Equipment Required for Racing Quarter
Midgets
Helmets
Helmets used in QMA are required
to be of a SA 90 rating or newer. They must be well-fitted, full-face helmets
free of cracks and impacts. Visors must be free of scratches and scuffs for
optimum visibility. Chinstraps must not be frayed or deteriorated. They must be
in operational working order and anchored well.
Driver
Suits/Jackets
A SFI 3.2A-1 rated jacket in good condition is
required for competition in QMA. The Jacket must provide full coverage from
neck to waist, and extend completely to the gloves. Full-length pants are
required. At this time, the pants do not need to be SFI 3.2-1 rated, but is
recommended if possible. Jeans are acceptable, but no sweat pants, pajama pants
or pants made of nylon material are allowed.
Neck Brace
A
Neck brace in good condition, made of Nomex, with a SFI 3.3 rating is
required.
Arm Restraints
Arm restraints in good condition
are mandatory for all drivers, and are used in conjunction with the seat
belts quick release mechanism. This allows for quick exit if necessary.
The arm restrains are positioned and secured on the forearm, between the wrist
and elbow. Arm restrains must be adjustable, and be adjusted so that when the
driver is fully seated, their hands are unable to touch the overhead bar of the
roll cage.
Gloves
Two layer Nomex gloves with a SFI 3.2A-5
rating are mandatory. The drivers gloves must completely cover the hands
and fingers.
Socks and Shoes
Shoes are required to
completely cover the feet of the drivers. Socks are required to also cover
ankle, not leaving any exposed bare skin.
Hans or Hutchins devices are
optional
It's important to take safety into your own hands. As a
Quarter Midget handler, you are ultimately responsible for the safety of your
child.
Rules and requirements are subject to change. If in doubt,
ask your Safety Director. |
